My mother-in-law...

I am really happy about the message in french before this one, so for once I will translate...

My Mother-in-law once had the gall (how could she???) to take my darling little first newborn into her bedroom in the middle of the night to "let me sleep!" I was not happy.
I was possessive.
Just a little bit.

I complained to my older sister, wise mother of 5. She laughed and said that by the time I had 3, I wouldn't worry about that kind of things any more !

This was an understatement if ever there was one. By the fourth child, my mother-in-law had 3 of them in her en-suite baby-room, with us snoring away at the other end of the holiday house.
They say that a person's faults get worse when they get older. It works the other way round for my MIL. She is more fun, more relaxed, easier-going. Or maybe I see her good sides nowadays. She doesn't take offence, she doesn't hold grudges. She laughs, she is in a good mood all the time, she is a very active person.

I get on well with my MIL.

She irons everything. I don't iron anything. She starts getting her midday meals ready at 9 am, I start at 12.30 for 12... Her cooking and her dishes are beautiful, mine don't look like anything.

Table, cheese platter and flower decoration by my MIL for a family celebration. She did what she could with the  means at hand in my cupboards, a real feat!

She wears heels, I never do. She loves shopping, I hate it. She likes long hair, I like them short. She adores cut flowers, I prefer them in the earth. She is extremely generous, I am kind of tight. She is meat and butter, I am vegetables and olive oil.

There is one thing we have in common!

And. She adores all her grandchildren. All ten of them, without any exception. No preferences either. Unconditionally.

I love my mother-in-law.

The princess in the middle

One month before I became pregnant with her, a very dear friend, father figure to both of us, died. 4 months later, Jérôme's father died. I made the wish that this child I was expecting would be born with both men's best qualities. What a burden of expectations I threw at her!

She cried non stop on days 2 and 3 after she was born.

Then I bought "The Contented Little Baby Book" and followed the method, minute by minute and it worked immediately. Amazing. (yes, I know, there are lots of things to say, pro and cons,... but I was desperate and it worked, so there.)

The screams stopped, she was a contented little baby.

And then she turned one.

The day she turned one, she walked.
And then...

If I was 5 minutes later than usual preparing her meal, I would find her standing up, by the bin, eating potato peelings or food wrappers.
If I was in the shower with  her nearby, she would join me fully dressed, shoes included, and do it so fast that it was too late to salvage anything.
After two heavy sleepers, she was our early bird, up at 6 every day of the year, no matter what, from day 1 to age 8 when I guess she decided to start catching up on all the lost sleep. After years of strict principles on TV, early morning videos became our closest accomplices.

When she was 4, a couple of well meaning friends, visiting us for the week-end in our house, talked to us very earnestly about the fact that we were not treating her the same as the 2 others (number 4 was not born yet,) that we were letting her get away with murder and that it was unfair to her siblings.

My point up till then was that you don't deal the same with all children and I knew that this one was 'bigger than life.' I used to let her have minor burns, I used to laugh if she poured water on the floor (but made her help me mop afterwards), I used to say 'too bad, this toy is broken now, what did you learn out of using it like you did?' and true, the others were not allowed to behave like that.

Well. Very very stupid me listened to these well meaning friends and I started behaving differently with her. I did not let her get away with her former behaviour. Which means that she was constantly told off. Constantly. Because she needs to experiment, dismantle, break things to understand how they work, because she needs to touch, taste, use, push to make them hers or to accept concepts like 'dangerous, poisonous, impolite', she was forever an outlaw.

I am not sure what impact we had on her development, but this 9 year old child has a long way to go to regain her self-esteem.
She does not trust herself, and the only way to achieve positive actions with her is to tread carefully, tenderly, and give her tons of love and then, only then, get to the action required at the time. Any other course of action is doomed and breeds constant requests, demands, temper outburst, foot stomping and so on.
She does not hear the word 'No'. She will resort to any devious solutions to get to her goal. She will wear you down.

What a challenge she is, and how rewarding for everybody when things have been achieved without pain, tears and screams. With a smile, with a laugh, with love.

I love this sequence of photographs. She had just woken up, and she is not a happy early riser any more. I coaxed gently and nicely and you can see the result as the photos unravel. It was a precious moment!

Today

Anything to say here? Hellooooo?
Sorry, Hélène is surfing the net and checking the hourly updates in the news. She has indeed nothing to say, she is just wondering and reading and wondering, pondering....

On Saturday evening, 18.30 french time, whilst other things were happening elsewhere in the world, Middledaughter was doing her Holy Communion in a suburb of Paris.
That is a Very Important Event. However, I got very very annoyed by the priest's speech, he is so extreme, too extreme for me. Telling the children: "If your parents tell you on Sunday morning that going to mass is NOT important, they LIE! Don't believe them, because you HAVE to come and meet Jesus every Sunday blablablablabla...."
Grrrr, I am still angry. It's not so much the message I resent, as the way and the words used to pass it on. Where was the message of love, where was the Happy Spirit?

I guess I can't chose to half belong to a Church. Like I can't decide not to be French hahaha.

I am an artist in the kitchen. I am the only one who knows it.

I am finally mastering the difficult art of making polenta. You may smile. It's a big feat for me, I totally did not understand how it was meant to look, taste, feel like, to start with.
Today, I looked up 'polenta' in Tea's blog as I remembered a wonderful post she had written about it, and I used Tartelette's post on radishes to do a mix and match, thus forgetting that the whole post's name was "rosemary roasted radishes and turkey brie panini", not just 'roasted radishes". Small detail.

Well, I guess Tartelette's radishes were better than mine. Or maybe cooked radishes are an acquired taste. Or both. Or maybe you're not meant to mix them with black olives. Or maybe my children are difficult (I did like them roasted.)
Ahem.
The radishes, not the children.

Anyway, I used Roquefort instead of Taleggio, added a bit of cream and heated both to make a sauce rather than just strips of cheese on top of the polenta. It may have something to do with the fact that not all my children like blue cheese and I would have had a riot on my hands.
I kind of gently fried my boring pink radishes and some black olives.

The colours looked good and the Man loved the Roquefort sauce with his polenta. Had a half ironic smile over the radish and olive addendum. Eventually agreed with me (I prodded and he treaded very carefully, I may say) that it would have been even better with mushrooms. Tea, you are entitled to strut and sing 'I told you so'.

And I will try to make the radish recipe with ALL the ingredients.

A toute chose...

Biocar

In case a translation is needed, this guy drives a Bioethanol-fueled Hummer...

I won't even try to rant about this. It just made me laugh, snort, smirk, ... Somebody is making a statement here, but what comes to mind is "The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks."

How I manage my mind...

(Same post in french just before, here, but actually not literally translated!!!)
Vocabulary for this 'mind management' course I am taking is failing me, hence the post in french about it. I am going to try to translate the main ideas...

I am starting to understand the reason why communication between my husband and myself is not that simple. After 18 years of marriage, some of you would be entitled to suggest it was high time.

So when the Man is explaining to me anything to do with computers for instance, he states the main idea and goes straight to the point; after 2 sentences I have no idea what he is talking about.. Can you imagine how dumb I feel then?
When I explain something to him, he gets bored by the thousand details I enclose in my story, and either finishes himself my demonstration with the main idea which is kind of what I wanted to say but not quite, or asks me after a while 'And your point is?'
Part of our communication is not very smooth.

Thankfully, in our case, we know each other so well that we we seem to have developped telepathic skills, enabling us to communicate with half sentences, and that works well. As long as there is no explaining to do, we are fine!

Some of you might mention that the Mars an Venus books have already covered this issue.

But I am digressing. This course I am taking is not about communication, it is about understanding how my mind works, how I use this new knowledge by improving the way I process informations.

When I meet someone new, why do I remember their voice but not their face?
Another classic example is the 'pincode' you have to dial to get inside buildings in Paris. I had to remember one this morning, to use 10 minutes later. No pen, no paper, oops. I said it aloud and turned it into a date. 57 May. It made me laugh, and I won't ever forget it.
Why does it work for me but not for some of my children? Accepting this difference is making me a more patient person already.

The main point of this course is to give the pupil confidence and tools. When they are in an education system that does not suit the way their mind works, they end up very quickly feeling like a failure and they don't know why they're failing. Understanding this and overcoming the 'system' by developing methods of learning better suited to them will breed confidence and self-esteem...

What do you see first, what does your mind tell you?
Do you see the big picture (geography, world map..), the symbol (the city of Sydney), art (architecture), the function (music, musicians, events...)? I personally use the 'merging' link here: Sydney Opera=Sydney, but others might do an 'inclusion' and think 'Australia': "This is IN Australia", or might evoque the year the opera was built and see a timeline and so forth.

I am not going to detail the course here. First of all I am encountering the usual obstacle, ie I understood perfectly what I heard, was taught and practised, but am unable to explain what we did in a logical sequence (mhm, not there yet!!!) And second it should be done by professionals, which I am not (in case you were wondering.)
Look up "Antoine de La Garanderie" and "mind management", there is plenty information available if I made you want to know more about it!

Wondering...

The bilingual blog is not something I am comfortable with.
The bilingual blog is something I am comfortable with.

Maybe it's time I addressed this issue. My issue.

When I was 5, we moved to Germany. I went into a local school and became fluent in german within a few months, to the point where local people had no idea I was french.
I learned spelling, counting, reading in both languages, german at school, homeschooling in french with my mother. There was a 4 year gap back in France at some point, but the rest of the time was thus spent in Germany.

I always was a chatterbox, so imagine, with 2 languages, the marvel of being able to say things with twice as much vocabulary as usual, to twice more people as usual, in great details, qualifying things with as many shades as you can?

I was not sure of myself, I was not very well dressed, I looked like a young boy, and when I met up with my french cousins in the summer, my pretty, fashionable, good-looking cousins, the fact that I spoke german would have been my only advantage in any peer competition and they made fun of it. Oh well. (It makes sense today but then it just made me sad.)

I moved back to France to go to university, studied... languages, worked, got married to a globetrotting french man and we started travelling towards english speaking countries. I lost my german fluency and became bilingual in english. Nowadays, german comes back to me after one or two glasses of champagne ;)

I read, write, think, speak in both languages, but I don't say the same things. I don't translate.
I learned to hug and say I love you to friends in english. In french it sounds touchy-feely and corny. Primary school was in english for 3 out of our 4 children. So I explain homework better in english. I reason with them in english. I yell at them in french.
I once broke up a day-long argument with my husband by simply switching to english. With one sentence it was over, I saw the understanding suddenly dawn on his face. Why had I not been able to get through to him in french?

For a cook, imagine having 2 stoves that you use everyday, often but for different things, and you know most people make do with only one, but you are a better cook with your 2 stoves, because you love to cook, you know them both perfectly and they don't do the same things. So okay, it takes a lot of space in your kitchen, sometimes it drives you mad to have this need to have both, but that's the way you like cooking best.

It makes me feel disconnected from some people I love, and I am afraid to sound arrogant to them. It makes me similar to some people I am less close to, but because we connect on this level it's sometimes easier to be around them.

So now, here I am with this blog, trying to say things, in either language. French for the funny, day to day things, english for introspection. Why is that? I know where it comes from, but I don't understand why I can't change that, be the same person in both languages, it's as if I needed to pull a mask on or off. I guess we all do it, to a certain extent, depending who we are with at the time. But hiding behind a language... I seem to have been doing it for a looooooong time.

Is it a good or bad thing?
I am now at this point where I am wondering whether I want to translate every single post in the other language or just keep going like this, at the risk of boring or frustrating some readers. It is not the first time I am addressing this issue, I need to find a way to make it work for this blog. Should I have 2 parallel blogs, posting every other day in each?

Even if you are only just visiting this post and happen to be reading this, I would really appreciate some feedback on this particular issue...

contente pas contente, that is not the question

“I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.”Mark Twain

The man with the sharpening tools

Just tell me if you have ever seen something like this:

No? Well neither had I, until last Friday.
It all started a few weeks ago with Jérôme showing me some beautiful knives in a shopwindow and complaining that ours at home ought to be sharpened. I answered -annoyingly I suppose- that we had this thing (called a 'sharpener'!!!) to sharpen them and that neither of us ever use it. He simply stated that he did not know how to use it properly and wanted the knives to be professionally sharpened.
I looked blankly at him and burst out laughing "All right. So you want me to sit on the doorsteps and wait for the (quick check with an online translator- oops I don't think I mean a grinder, I'll just describe it) man to come by with his sharpening tools and ask him to fix my knives and saucepans?"
I obviously had the sympathy of a lady standing next to us, she laughed at this and at my husband's tongue-in-cheek answer "Yes, that's exactly what I want.
-Well, our knives are gonna wait a while, I promise you that."

I should never promise things I don't know anything about. On Friday, Jérôme arrived home from a meeting and said "Quick, the 'man with the sharpening things' is in the street, now is the time to get our knives done."
-You're joking, right? Stop making fun of me.
-Not joking, but you have to hurry, he is making his way down the street."
Sure enough, there he was.

Check out the window, you never know, there might be some flying pigs flying by.
